Engineering with Purpose: Leading the Systems Behind The World’s Best Trucks
At Kenworth, building The World’s Best Trucks requires more than advanced technology, it also requires people who embrace complexity, pursue excellence, and lead with purpose. For Josh Brinkerhoff, that responsibility is both a challenge and a point of pride.
As an assistant chief engineer, Josh leads a team responsible for integrating new engine platforms into Kenworth vehicles, ensuring they meet evolving emissions regulations while delivering the durability and reliability customers expect over the long haul.
“At the core, we’re responsible for what makes the truck operate,” Josh says. “It’s about making sure the product not only meets requirements but performs in the real-world conditions our customers rely on every day.”
Josh’s path to Kenworth began with a lifelong fascination with vehicles. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, Josh spent time learning hands-on: taking cars apart, putting them back together, and even riding along on laps at Barber Motorsports Park. That early passion led him to pursue a mechanical engineering degree before starting his career at Nissan North America as a new-model launch engineer.
In that role, Josh was responsible for front-end vehicle systems and for collaborating across design and manufacturing teams to bring new vehicles to market. He also spent time supporting current production as a core model engineer, solving problems in real time as vehicles moved through the build process.
While the experience was invaluable, it also clarified what he was looking for next.
“In automotive you might design for 150,000 miles,” Josh explains. “In trucking, you’re designing for a million. That’s a completely different challenge, and one that really drew me in.”
The opportunity to create products with lasting impact eventually brought him to Kenworth where he has spent the past ten years building both technical expertise and leadership perspective across engineering and program management. From cooling and engine integration to leading medium-duty product development and managing advanced programs, including battery-electric vehicles, Josh has built a reputation for delivering results and developing teams.
“Program management gave me a much wider lens,” he says. “It’s not just about the design; it’s about how everything comes together.”
Today, his work sits at the center of Kenworth’s most critical advancements in electrical architecture and chassis systems. Whether it’s developing integrated electrical platforms for zero‑emissions vehicles, optimizing control systems, or engineering chassis solutions that support new powertrain technologies, Josh and his team focus on building robust, scalable systems that balance performance, reliability, customer experience, and evolving regulatory requirements.
“Some parts of the industry stay the same, but others change. We have to make sure our products adapt to that,” he says. “Our goal is to understand how customers use our trucks, then design solutions that not only meet requirements but improve the overall experience.”
That mindset extends to how he leads. Josh encourages his team to tackle challenges head on to test boldly, learn early and build better.
“Don’t shy away from testing and the lessons it reveals,” he says. “Early discoveries lead to smarter decisions and a better final product.”
That approach played a critical role during the accelerated integration of a new natural gas engine platform. Faced with a compressed timeline – roughly 18 months versus a typical three-year cycle – Josh and his team developed new approaches to early testing and validation. By identifying potential issues sooner through bench testing, they were able to iterate quickly and move into full vehicle testing with confidence.
The result was a successful launch without compromising quality.
It’s a philosophy shaped not only by his career but also by life outside of work. When he’s not engineering solutions, Josh can often be found mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest or camping with his family. Climbing, in particular, mirrors his approach to leadership.
“The best views don’t come easily,” he says. “And the same is true for great products.”
Those experiences reinforce the resilience and adaptability he brings to his role every day; qualities that help his team navigate complex challenges and deliver at a high level.
For Josh, being ‘Behind the Best’ isn’t just about technical excellence, it’s about people.
“We have an incredible team here at Kenworth,” he says. “The scale of what we do and the impact we have is something I’m proud to be part of.”
As the industry continues to evolve, Josh remains focused on what matters most: driving innovation, embracing challenges, and helping to ensure Kenworth continues to deliver The World’s Best Trucks.
